About the museum
On the edge of Žaliakalnis, by the Eigulių hill-fort, since 1932 stands a wooden house resembling a Lithuanian manor, where the composer, conductor and teacher Juozas Gruodis lived with his wife Stasė. The house was designed by the well-known interwar architect Feliksas Vizbaras. After the composer’s death, Stasė Gruodienė lived alone in this large house for more than two decades.
In 1967 a music library and a memorial room of the composer were set up here, and in 1974, through the efforts of Stasė Gruodienė, the J. Gruodžio memorialinis muziejus (J. Gruodis Memorial Museum) was established as a branch of the K. Petrausko memorialinis muziejus (K. Petrauskas Memorial Museum). Since 2013 it has been one of the five branches of the Kauno miesto muziejus (Kaunas City Museum).
In the two-storey house visitors can see four rooms: on each floor there is a memorial and an exhibition space. On the ground floor the couple’s living room has been recreated; on the first floor there is a sunny music room with a small balcony. The exhibition “Mano darbas taurus” (My Work Is Noble), opened in 2014, tells about the composer’s studies in Moscow and Leipzig, his creative work, his teaching and the life of the Gruodis family. Its most striking part is the collection of figurines that Stasė Gruodienė folded from sweet wrappers.
