About the museum
The Kaunas Police Museum opened on 30 September 2002 in the Naujamiestis district of Kaunas, on Gedimino Street. It was established by a civic organisation, the Kaunas sub-branch of the Lithuanian branch of the International Police Association (IPA), and is therefore also called the IPA Kaunas Branch Museum.
In 2015 the museum was reorganised into “IPA Kauno muziejus” and moved to premises of Mykolas Romeris University, at the Academy of Public Security (faculty) on Maironio Street.
The exhibition shows police uniforms and their details from various countries, caps and helmets, the restraint chair of the Kaunas sobering-up station, criminals' tools, counterfeit money, bottles of smuggled schnapps, newspapers, documents, sports trophies, medals and photographs. Inventions by detainees are also displayed, for example a syringe hidden in a bar of soap or a pocket knife built into a toothpaste tube. Officers' work equipment is also on show: old telephones, traffic batons and the first radio communication equipment. In the courtyard stand decommissioned police vehicles – a Ural motorcycle (1978) and cars produced between 1986 and 1992: GAZ, BARKAS, UAZ, VAZ and RAF.
