About the museum
The Centre national de l'audiovisuel was founded in 1989 under Culture Minister Robert Krieps. It was meant to decentralize cultural life. It settled in Dudelange, building on an existing tradition of cinema and photography there, cultivated in part at the “Nei Liicht” arts centre. Its first director was Jean Back. Since 2007, the CNA has been based in the “Op der Schmelz” building, which it shares with the regional cultural centre and the regional music school; it houses archive rooms, studios and laboratories.
In Dudelange, the CNA also runs the Waassertuerm+Pomhouse exhibition venue. The former water tower was renovated between 2009 and 2012 and opened in 2012; until December 2020 it hosted the photo exhibition “The Bitter Years” by Edward Steichen. Today the spaces are used for changing exhibitions.
At Clervaux Castle, the CNA houses the permanent exhibition “The Family of Man”, with 503 original prints and restored prints, which Steichen designed in 1955 for the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It has been shown there since 1994 and reopened in 2013 after a restoration. There are also film screenings (CinéStarlight) and a publicly accessible media library.
