About the museum
The core of the museum consists of finds from the archaeological excavations on the Mont St-Jean, near the restored remains of Dudelange’s medieval castle. The research began in 1970 under the direction of a local history society and brought to light, among other things, ceramics, coins, firearms, military brooches and stones.
To make the finds permanently accessible, they were housed in the town hall after two short exhibitions in 1972 and 1975. The museum was officially opened only in 1982, after extensive renovations.
The collection covers objects from several periods: according to Wikipedia, they range from Paleolithic tools through Gallo-Roman finds to evidence from the 15th and 16th centuries. Another area is devoted to the history of the local steelworks, and there was also a photo gallery that hosted rotating exhibitions.
