About the museum
About 1.5 kilometers from Stolzembourg lie the remains of a former copper mine. The copper-bearing ore veins along the Klangbaach attracted investors again and again over more than 500 years, even though the area is far from any industrial region. Mining was especially active around 1856, 1882, 1901 and 1938; each time, the main problem was the water that repeatedly flooded the tunnels.
The last mining period lasted from 1938 to 1944. The surface structures, such as the headframe, offices and workshops, were completely destroyed after World War II. For this reason, the operations of those final years were reconstructed digitally from old black-and-white photos and plans and shown in a short video.
In recent years, part of the underground galleries has been opened to visitors. Today the site includes a museum on geology, mining history and the different mining periods, a 1.5-kilometer geological trail with ten information panels, and guided tours of the galleries about 50 meters underground. It is run by the Syndicat d’Initiative Stolzembourg, and tours are led by guides from the association “Guides des Ardennes.”
