About the museum

The museum opened in 2011 in the old town of Diekirch, opposite the old Saint-Laurent church. It came about when a school complex was built: the earlier museum of Roman mosaics in the basement of the old school needed a new home. The municipality bought two houses in the town centre, but then opted for new construction and widened the concept from a pure mosaic display into a museum of town history. The highlight is the Roman mosaic with the riddle masks; the three mosaics belong to the National Museum, which restored them.

The permanent exhibition spans five rooms on several levels and traces the history of the town from prehistory to the present, in the context of national history. Topics include the footprint of humankind, faith and burial rites from prehistory to Roman antiquity, including a medieval crypt, settlement and archaeology on site, and the development of Diekirch into a town, shown with a large town model.

The collection had to be built up over time. It draws on archaeological material from the holdings of the National Museum, on loans and donations from private individuals, as well as on coins, postcards and everyday objects. Next to the museum is the “Kulturhaus” (gallery), which hosts exhibitions that change monthly, along with workshops.
