About the museum
The Diekirch museum grew out of the initiative of a few enthusiasts and volunteers in 1982. It developed into a house of international renown that strives for a balanced and impartial presentation of events. Its stated aim is to pass on the memory of the Second World War to future generations, as direct witnesses and veterans become fewer and fewer.
The focus is the Ardennes Offensive (Battle of the Bulge) of 1944/45. In a series of life-size dioramas and thematic rooms, the museum shows how the fighting affected the region and presents events from American, German and civilian perspectives. Over 3,000 m² display weapons, uniforms, military equipment, wheeled and tracked vehicles, personal items, photographs, documents and maps. The centrepiece is a detailed model of the night crossing of the Sûre near Diekirch by units of the 5th US Infantry Division on January 18, 1945.
Further areas are devoted to the history of the Luxembourg Army since the founding of the state: the volunteer company that existed from 1881 to 1944, the army after 1945, Luxembourgers in Allied armies in the First and Second World Wars and in the Korean War (1950 to 1953), and humanitarian and peacekeeping missions.
