About the museum
The museum in Ettelbruck was officially opened on July 7, 1995. It honors General George S. Patton Jr., whose 80th Infantry Division liberated the town on December 25, 1944; that is why Ettelbruck is nicknamed “Patton Town.” From 1954 to 2004, the internationally known Remembrance Day, commemorating the liberation by the U.S. Army, was held here every year. In 2014, the building was thoroughly renovated and the exhibition expanded.
The exhibition covers about 650 square meters across four floors. Two rooms are devoted to Patton and the history of Remembrance Day; the most notable piece is the original plaster cast of the three-meter-high Patton statue by the American sculptor James Earle Fraser. A large part shows, with photos, documents and original objects, the German invasion of May 1940, repression and persecution during the occupation, the general strike of 1942, the forced conscription of young Luxembourgers and the beginnings of the resistance.
One room covers the liberation in September 1944, and a diorama depicts the Ardennes Offensive. Another room displays weapons, ammunition and equipment found between 1975 and 1995 on the battlefields of the Luxembourg Ardennes. One area is dedicated to the air war, with the remains of about thirty downed aircraft. The museum also maintains an extensive archive on World War II in Luxembourg.
