About the museum
The Musée national d’histoire naturelle, known for short as the Naturmusée, is Luxembourg’s state natural history museum. It is located in the Grund district on Rue Münster, near the Neumünster Abbey; the museum’s scientific research centre is also on Rue Münster (No. 24). Alongside the exhibition galleries, the museum conducts research in palaeontology, zoology, botany, mineralogy and geology, and holds extensive scientific collections, including animals, plants, fungi and lichens, minerals, rocks, fossils, meteorites and tektites, as well as DNA and tissue samples.
The permanent exhibition traces the history of life, from its origins to today’s diversity. One room presents biodiversity as the “library of the living”, with taxidermied animals from around the world and from Luxembourg’s forests, meadows, fields and towns. The evolution section covers drifting continents, fossils as witnesses to past life forms, and the Loschbour Man, the oldest known Luxembourger.
The museum’s gardens in the Grund are open during opening hours and promote local plant diversity. The small garden “Ënner dem Kiischtebam” belonged to the church until 2021, has been used by the museum since 2010 and was redesigned in 2024; a research trial garden is not open to the public. In summer, workshops on the animals and plants of the region are held there.
