About the museum
Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra are late Neolithic megalithic sites that are more than 5,000 years old. Since 1992 they have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage serial inscription “Megalithic Temples of Malta”.
Ħaġar Qim stands on a ridge with views of the sea to the west and a fertile plain to the east. Its main structure has doorways and other features along the outer wall and originally had a corbelled roof. Mnajdra lies about 500 metres further downhill and has three structures. The south doorway of the main temple lines up with the sunrise at the spring and autumn equinoxes, and the light of the winter and summer solstices falls on decorated slabs.
Shelters built in 2008 protect both sites and slow their deterioration. The low-relief carvings at Ħaġar Qim are copies: one original is in the National Museum of Archaeology in Valletta and the other in the visitor centre.
