About the museum
The Malta Maritime Museum stands on the waterfront of Birgu, also known as Vittoriosa. The site was the galley arsenal of the Knights of St John, the yard where the Order built and maintained the galleys that defended the island and projected its power across the Mediterranean.
After the British arrived in the early 19th century the site was transformed. The architect William Scamp, known for his naval buildings, designed the Royal Naval Bakery here in 1844, a large facility that supplied bread and provisions to the Royal Navy’s Mediterranean Fleet and a prime example of British military architecture in Malta. Later the building housed the headquarters of the Dockyard Constabulary. When the British forces left in 1979 it was freed for a new use, and the Malta Maritime Museum opened in 1992 with ship models, artefacts and documents on Malta’s maritime history from antiquity to the naval struggles of the 20th century.
The museum has now closed to visitors while it is redesigned and renewed. Heritage Malta plans to tell the story of a seafaring island and its people in a fully redeveloped building, backed by a large digitisation project on Malta’s maritime heritage.
