Amsterdam Tulip Museum
Small museum on the Prinsengracht devoted to the 400-year history of the tulip – from Central Asia and tulip mania to today's flower trade.
About the museum
The Amsterdam Tulip Museum opened in 2004. It was founded by tulip experts and enthusiasts from the bulb-growing region of North Holland and is now run by the nonprofit Stichting Tulip Museum. The rooms were designed in collaboration with artists, filmmakers and craftspeople from the region so that international visitors in particular could experience the story vividly.
Since 2012 the museum has been located on the Prinsengracht in the Jordaan, diagonally across from the Anne Frank Huis, in a historic canal house. In several small rooms it traces the tulip's journey from its wild forms in Central Asia through the gardens of the Ottoman Empire to the Netherlands, where it first appeared in the late 16th century as a collector's item for wealthy enthusiasts.
The focus is on the tulip mania of the 1630s, when individual bulbs became objects of speculation, the flower's role in the art and culture of the Golden Age, and breeding and world trade up to the present day. The museum also shows historic objects and documents, films and interactive stations. It has a shop selling tulip bulbs, books and souvenirs.
