About the museum

The museum opened on 19 April 1999 and considers itself the first museum dedicated entirely to the phenomenon of fluorescence. It was founded by the artist Nick Padalino, who still runs it in person today.

The rooms lie beneath the Electric Lady gallery, which has existed since 1987. At the centre is a room-filling fluorescent environment that visitors walk into: they do not merely look on but become part of the artwork themselves – the museum calls this "Participatory Art".

During the tour, the host also presents large collections of fluorescent minerals from around the world, which glow in vivid colours under different wavelengths of light, and shows historic fluorescent objects and advertising. Visits are by prior appointment only.

Highlights

  • Walk-in fluorescent participatory installation
  • Guided tour with demonstration of fluorescent minerals from around the world
  • Historic fluorescent objects and advertising

Permanent exhibitions

  • Fluoreszierende Mitmach-Umgebung – Room-filling installation under blacklight in which visitors themselves become part of the artwork.
  • Fluoreszierende Mineralien – Minerals from around the world that glow in intense colours under different wavelengths of light, with demonstrations.
