About the museum
The Batavus Museum in Heerenveen opened in 2004 for the 100th anniversary of the bicycle brand. The company was founded by Andries Gaastra on 15 September 1904; at first he traded in clocks and sewing machines, and bicycles were added later. After the Second World War the business grew strongly, and in 1956 a modern factory with around 350 employees went into operation.
The collection comprises more than 150 bicycles from the early days to the present, including penny-farthings, wooden bicycles and running machines, along with accessories such as oil lamps and bicycle pumps.
Since spring 2025 the museum has been part of the KOGA Experience Center on the company grounds at Industrieweg, which also includes a production hall and a showroom. It shows milestones in the cycling history of both brands, such as steel racing bikes from the 1970s, racing bicycles of Olympic champion Leontien van Moorsel and the bicycle on which Mark Beaumont circled the world in 79 days.
