About the museum
The idea of an Oudheidkamer (local history room) for Weststellingwerf goes back to 1 December 1943, when the then mayor Maas invited people to a meeting. In 1946 there was a first exhibition in the “Irene” building, and on 9 May 1949 the association was officially recognised. From 1955 to 2009 the museum was housed in the Windlust mill in Wolvega, where it opened on 2 July 1955.
Since 2009 it has been based in the former official residence of several mayors of the municipality of Weststellingwerf on Hoofdstraat Oost near Griffioenpark. The striking house dates from 1925.
On display are a grocery shop from the good old days, showcases with traditional costumes, everyday objects and tools, paintings and photos, a classroom, a living room with a box bed in the style of 1920, a room on old crafts, and true-to-scale wooden carts. Documentation folders with photos from all the villages of the municipality invite visitors to browse. The museum is run by volunteers.
