About the museum
The roots of the Bonnefanten go back to 1884, when the Limburg historical and archaeological society (LGOG) opened a provincial museum of antiquities in Maastricht. The museum moved several times; it owes its current name to the former Bonnefanten convent, where it was housed from 1951 to 1978 – the name derives from the popular term “Couvent des bons enfants” for the convent, whose sisters educated children in the 18th century.
In 1968 the LGOG transferred its collection to a new foundation, under which the museum gradually developed into a pure art museum; the archaeological collection went to the city of Maastricht in 1999. In 1995 the Bonnefanten moved into a new building by the Italian architect Aldo Rossi on the former site of the Société Céramique ceramics factory on the banks of the Maas. With its zinc-clad dome, the building quickly became a city landmark; since 2026 a permanent presentation has paid tribute to the architect.
The collection combines old masters – Italian painting from the 14th to 16th centuries, medieval sculpture from the Meuse region with works by Jan van Steffeswert and the Master of Elsloo, Dutch and German painting, and Maastricht silver – with contemporary art. There the focus is on Minimal Art, Conceptual Art and Arte Povera, as well as on idiosyncratic positions outside the canon, such as Marcel Broodthaers, Roman Signer, Franz West and Navid Nuur. The museum also presents the Bonnefanten Award for Contemporary Art; in 2025 it welcomed some 135,000 visitors.
