About the museum
The museum lies in the dunes west of the Hollum lighthouse. In the Second World War an Atlantic Wall bunker complex in the Wadden area stood here, with crew and ammunition bunkers, barracks, anti-aircraft defences and two radar stations code-named RITA; on the east side a minefield secured the site. Most of the bunkers on the island have disappeared, either destroyed or sunk into the dune sand.
The museum was set up in the former kitchen bunker of the battery stationed here and opened on 28 October 2016. The former holiday cottage Donax serves as the entrance hall to the bunker. Anyone who walks down the stairs reaches a quiet, underground exhibition space.
The first part is a memorial room with an artwork by Jes van der Bijl. After that come finds, pictures and personal stories of Amelanders from the war years; in the last room a diorama shows the island's war history. The museum is unstaffed: access is via a ticket machine at the entrance. It is run by the Stichting Amelander Musea, which also offers bicycle excursions to the bunkers in the west of the island.
