About the museum
Design Museum Dedel was opened by Hedy d’Ancona on 1 July 2019. It shows two-dimensional design, above all posters and wallpaper from the past two centuries, in Huis Dedel, a town palace on the Prinsegracht. The jurist Willem Dedel had the house built in 1642 on the newly dug canal; a design by Jacob van Campen and/or Pieter Post, the architects of the Mauritshuis, is presumed. The classicist façade still bears the family’s coats of arms today.
In the 18th century, Jan Hudde Dedel had the staircase decorated with Rococo stucco by Italian craftsmen and commissioned ceiling paintings by Jacob de Wit; these were later sold. Historic wallpaper, however, has survived in several rooms, the oldest dating from 1799. From 1908 to 2016 an antiquarian bookshop and auction house used the building and installed bookshelves in almost every room; when these were removed in 2016, the old wallpaper came to light again.
The museum works with loan collections and presents, in a semi-permanent display, 150 years of advertising and design as well as changing thematic exhibitions. The building is being restored step by step with only the most urgent funds; the roof and façades are finished, while the Great Hall, stucco and garden are still to be done. The house is run with private funds and volunteers.
