About the museum
The museum is on the Wagenstraat, in the former Hotel De Jong, where the Korean jurist and diplomat Yi Jun died in July 1907. He had traveled to the Second Hague Peace Conference to draw attention to the threatened independence of Korea, but was not admitted to the negotiations. The circumstances of his death are still considered unclear today, and he is an important commemorative figure in Korea.
The Korean entrepreneur Lee Kee-hang bought the building in 1992 to save it from demolition, and founded the museum together with his wife Song Chang-ju in 1995. The rooms were restored to their original condition in cooperation with the owner, the Korean government, the embassy and the city of The Hague.
The museum shows personal belongings of Yi Jun and messages of peace, and sees itself as a place of remembrance and peace work. It belongs to the International Network of Peace Museums (INMP) and is often visited by high-ranking Korean delegations.
