Temporary location (expected until 2027-12-31). The museum building at Paulus Potterstraat 8 is being renovated. Until December 31, 2027, the museum is showing a highlights exhibition in the Royal Coster Diamonds building (Paulus Potterstraat 6, entrance no. 2).
During the renovation, the museum is showing a selection of its collection: from how diamonds form, to the polisher’s craft and Amsterdam’s diamond history, to replicas of famous stones and crown jewels.
About the museum
The Diamant Museum Amsterdam was founded in 2007 by the diamond polishing company Coster Diamonds (now Royal Coster Diamonds), which has been cutting diamonds in Amsterdam since 1840 and is considered the oldest diamond polishing works in the world still in operation. The museum moved into a 19th-century building on Paulus Potterstraat, right next to the polishing works on Museumplein.
The collection tells how diamonds form deep inside the earth, how cleavers and polishers turn rough stones into sparkling brilliants, and how Amsterdam became a center of the diamond trade from the late 16th century onward, when religious refugees from the Southern Netherlands brought the craft with them. In 1908 the Cullinan, the largest rough diamond ever found, was cleaved and cut in Amsterdam.
The displays consist mainly of replicas of famous stones and crown jewels, as well as jewelry and polishers’ tools. The main building is currently being renovated for a relaunch; until the end of 2027, the museum is showing a smaller selection of its collection as a special exhibition, which visitors enter through Royal Coster’s factory rooms.
