About the museum

The Moco Museum (the name stands for "Modern Contemporary") was founded in April 2016 by the Amsterdam gallerists Kim Logchies-Prins and Lionel Logchies as an independent, privately funded institution. The aim was to make modern and contemporary art accessible to a broad audience that tends to avoid traditional museums.

The museum is housed in the Villa Alsberg on the Museumplein, designed in 1904 by the architect Eduard Cuypers for the banker Siegmund Alsberg. It was the first private residence on the square and today stands between the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum. Because the building is listed, the exhibition rooms are spread over several floors with narrow staircases; no elevator may be installed. The museum also has a sculpture garden.

The Moco became known above all for its Banksy show "Laugh Now," featuring authenticated works from private collections. It also shows icons of pop and street art such as Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Yayoi Kusama, as well as digital and immersive installations, for example by Studio Irma. Following its success in Amsterdam, the brand opened further venues in Barcelona and London.
