About the museum

In 1887, at the age of 21, Albert Heijn (1865–1945) took over his father's small grocery shop in Oostzaan, only about 12 square metres in size. From it grew a supermarket chain that is now present in the Netherlands and Belgium. From 1938 the company compiled an inventory so that a historic shop could be set up later.

The museum shop opened on 23 May 1967 at the Zaanse Schans. It consists of two relocated houses: the front shop comes from Zaandam (Oostzijde), the rear dwelling from the Kerkbuurt in Westzaan; both are Rijksmonuments. The original shop in Oostzaan no longer exists; the interior is a reconstruction.

On display are the original fittings with a wooden counter, large copper scales and wooden containers for coffee, tea and beans, as well as an elaborately decorated hand coffee mill; you can also see the counter behind which Albert Heijn himself once worked. In the rear, a small exhibition explains the history of coffee, which the company roasted itself from an early date. Volunteers tell the story of the company, and the shop can be explored online on a digital tour.
