About the museum
The house was built in 1658 as a residence on the Hazepad in Zaandijk and was partly converted into a bakery in 1753. It served as the Bolding bakery until 1956. In 1970 the Zaan company Koninklijke Wessanen donated the building to the Zaanse Schans, where it was rebuilt; on 8 June 1972 Queen Juliana opened the museum.
The shop is furnished in 19th-century style, with a marbled wooden floor, and in the bakehouse there is a genuine brick stone oven. In an adjoining room there is a parlour with a magnificent tiled fireplace, the so-called "Smuiger". Bakery and confectionery products made to old recipes are sold and can be tasted.
The name refers to the Duivekater, a typical Zaan sweet bread shaped like a cat's body, traditionally eaten at Christmas but also at Easter and Whitsun; a wooden relief above the front door depicts it. Speculaas, Taaitaai, marzipan, chocolate and sweets are also on offer.
