About the museum

The house on the Lagedijk in Zaandijk was built around 1710 for Cornelis Jacobsz. Honig, co-founder of the paper mill C. & J. Honig Breet. Wealthy paper manufacturers lived there for several generations; in 1830 Jacob Breet had landscape wall hangings painted by the Amsterdam painter Willem Uppink installed in the garden room.

From 1940 the house served as the Zaanlandsche Oudheidkamer and took in Jacob Honig Jansz. Jr.'s collection on the history of the Zaan region; in 1992 it became the Zaans Historisch Museum. When the Zaans Museum opened in 1999, the house was threatened with sale, but the municipality kept it. Since then it has been a living museum as the Honig Breethuis, showing the state of the house at the time of the Breet family around 1830.

Particular features are the Zaankamer with a view of the Zaan in the Neoclassical style, the garden room in the Rococo style, the living kitchen and the salon. The collection includes paintings, paper and household goods, some belonging to the municipality of Zaanstad and some to the supporting association.
