About the museum
Musiom is a small, independent museum of contemporary art in Amersfoort. The Musiom foundation was established on 31 May 2018; since 2018 the museum has been housed in its present building on the Stadsring following a thorough renovation. The name derives from the Old Latin form of the word “Muses”.
The building consists of two connected parts in the protected city area: a church of 1913, originally Mennonite, and a modernist association building of 1964. Over time the complex served, among other things, as a Remonstrant and Orthodox church, as the parish hall of a Pentecostal congregation, as an office and finally as a residence before becoming a museum.
The museum shows art by a generation of artists born around the 1950s who have been known nationally and internationally since the 1980s. Unlike most museums, it initially had no collection; it came about through contributions from the participating artists or their heirs and through private donations. On view are painting and sculpture, both abstract and figurative, plus three themed exhibitions a year. More than twenty artists are affiliated, and participation is by invitation only. Volunteers guide visitors through the house, a gallery on the first floor sells works by the participating artists, and sculpture is on display in the sculpture garden all year round.
