About the museum
The roots of the museum go back to 1870, when members of the Oudheidkundige Vereniging Flehite began collecting stories and objects from the city. In 1878 they excavated prehistoric burial mounds on the Leusder Heide; the urns found there were on public display from 1880. In 1889 the society acquired the house at Breestraat 78, a former military hospital, as a museum building, followed later by the neighbouring houses at Breestraat 80 and 76. After subsidence of the wall, the entrance was moved in 1898 to the rear on the Westsingel.
The three buildings are so-called Muurhuizen: they stand on the foundations of Amersfoort's first city wall and were built around 1540, as tree-ring analysis of the roof structures confirms. Breestraat 76 is the best preserved in its original state, with a medieval roof structure and wall paintings. After asbestos was found in the floors in 2007, all three houses were renovated and refitted together; in 2018 the exterior façade was restored.
Until July 2026 the museum was named after the medieval region of Flehite. With the renaming to Museum Amersfoort, the new permanent exhibition "Amorfortia – een stad vol verhalen" opened on 17 July 2026, together with a renewed entrance area. The museum belongs to the foundation Amersfoort in C, which also includes the art centre KAdE, the Mondriaanhuis and the architecture centre FASadE. In the Maak Mee Atelier visitors can get creative themselves, and from the museum café there is a view of the Koppelpoort.
