About the museum
Since 1994 the museum has borne the name of Marie Tak van Poortvliet (1871–1936), an art collector, anthroposophist and agricultural pioneer. At the beginning of the 20th century she had a villa built in Domburg and spent many summers there with the painter Jacoba van Heemskerck.
Originally the museum focused on the artists who lived and worked in Domburg in the first decades of the 20th century. It was a replica of the little art hall that had been built for them in 1911 opposite the bath pavilion and destroyed by storms in 1921. Unlike the original, it stands in the village centre rather than in the dunes. Notable guests included Jan Toorop, who stayed here almost every year between 1903 and 1922, and Piet Mondriaan, who made the transition from representational to abstract painting in Domburg.
The museum now sees itself as a home for classical modern art with a focus on the European artists' colonies, starting from Domburg, and also shows contemporary positions. An extension with a second hall and a study centre, designed by Cees Dam & Partners, is under construction. Since 31 August 2026 the building on Ooststraat has been closed for conversion and new construction; until the reopening, planned for mid-summer 2027, the museum is operating from an interim location.
