About the museum
Museum De Rijf is the local history museum of Prinsenbeek, a village near Breda, and is run by the Heemkundekring “Op de Beek”, founded in 1996. It opened on 8 October 2005 in the village's former municipal building and moved to Vijverstraat in 2010, before moving into its current home on Brielsedreef in October 2017; the reopening there took place on 9 December 2017.
The collection consists of objects, photos and documents gathered by residents of Prinsenbeek. The museum aims to bring back memories of the past for older visitors and to give young visitors a vivid introduction to their home village. On display are, among other things, a model of the village in the 1950s, a classroom, a church corner with a confessional, the painting studio of Jan Strube, agricultural tools, a parlour with an alcove bed and a police station; in addition there are changing exhibitions.
Behind the museum lies the “Bikse Kruidenhof”, an organically managed herb garden laid out in 2020, where culinary and medicinal herbs grow and where herbs, jam and honey are sold on opening days. Groups of ten or more can visit the museum outside opening days by arrangement, with or without a guide.
