About the museum

Museum van Egmond tells the story of the three Egmonds on the North Sea coast – Egmond aan Zee, Egmond aan den Hoef, and Egmond-Binnen – and of life between the dunes and the sea. It is run by volunteers, supported by donors and sponsors.

The museum is housed in a former Reformed church on the Zuiderstraat. One focus is the Egmond School. From the 1880s onward, the fishing village with its light and dunes attracted numerous painters, including artists from the circle of the Düsseldorf Academy and the Americans George Hitchcock and Gari Melchers. Their simple, realistic pictures of fishermen, families, and village scenes form the core of the painting collection, complemented by works by Roeland Koning.

The museum also displays a fisherman's cottage from around 1885, an old wooden rescue rowing boat, and an exhibition on the ongoing theme "Waterwolf", the struggle of the coastal village against storm floods and coastal erosion. A section also covers the history of the three Egmonds, including a model of the medieval castle.
