About the museum
The museum was founded in 1973 as the Museum voor Religieuze Kunst in a wing of the still inhabited Maria Refugie Abbey of the Bridgettine nuns in Uden. The foundation consisted of works from the Diocese of 's-Hertogenbosch, treasures belonging to the nuns and medieval sculptures lent by the Rijksmuseum.
The building was comprehensively renovated from 2005 to 2007 and again in 2018/2019 to plans by the architect Cees Dam. After the latest renovation it was named Museum Krona with the addition "Kunst, klooster, kruidentuin" – art, monastery and herb garden. The cloister is not open to the public, whereas the herb garden, modelled on medieval examples, is part of the visit.
The collection shows medieval sculptures, rare monstrances from around 1500, works by the Master of Koudewater, silverwork, manuscripts, icons, devotional cards (bidprentjes) and contemporary religious art. Particular emphasis is placed on objects connected with the Bridgettine convent. They reflect a southern Dutch and Flemish character; part of the collection can also be viewed online.
