About the museum
Museum Voorlinden shows the collection of Joop van Caldenborgh, known as the Caldic Collectie and regarded as the largest private art collection in the Netherlands. Assembled since the early 1970s, it consists mainly of 20th-century painting, sculpture, collage and photography. The museum is funded solely by admissions, restaurant and shop and receives no subsidies, which is why the Museumkaart and the VriendenLoterij VIP card are not valid here.
Construction began in 2013, and the museum was opened on 10 September 2016 in the presence of King Willem-Alexander. The building was designed by Kraaijvanger Architects: an elongated structure with natural stone walls the colour of dune sand and a great deal of glass, so that in large parts one feels in the middle of nature. The galleries are lit by daylight; the building includes around twenty rooms, an auditorium, a library and an education studio. About a hundred metres away stands the country house of 1912, which formerly housed a training centre of the Dutch postal service and now houses the restaurant.
The programme follows a threefold structure of collection presentations, changing solo exhibitions and permanent site-specific works. The latter include Leandro Erlich's "Swimming Pool", Richard Serra's "Open Ended", a Skyspace by James Turrell and the towers by Anselm Kiefer on the grounds. The garden around the museum was designed by the landscape architect Piet Oudolf. The nearby Clingenbosch sculpture park is also part of the offer; during the summer season it is accessible only with a guided tour.
