Waterliniemuseum Fort bij Vechten

Museum in Fort bij Vechten on the Hollandse Waterlinies and the Roman Limes frontier – two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in one place.

Opening hoursAdmission €12.50 Partially accessible

About the museum

The Waterliniemuseum is located at Fort bij Vechten, one of the largest forts of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Since opening in 2015, the museum has explained how the Dutch water lines worked and what their history is. It was realised by the municipality of Bunnik, Staatsbosbeheer, Nieuwland and the Province of Utrecht in close cooperation with other provinces.

The concept revolves around a clever defensive idea: when danger threatened, land was deliberately flooded, neither too deep nor too shallow, and the line was secured with forts, dikes and sluices. These Hollandse Waterlinies are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Next to the fort lies Castellum Fectio, a site on the Roman imperial frontier, the Limes along the Rhine, which is also a World Heritage Site. The museum thus connects two eras in one place; the fort also has a VVV information point as well as tours of the grounds.
