About the museum
The museum house at Meteorenweg 174 was built in 1922 as a worker's dwelling in Tuindorp Oostzaan. The city housing authority built roughly 1,350 houses there as a temporary settlement for the shipyard workers of Amsterdam's shipbuilding industry; they were designed by the municipal architects B.T. Boeijinga and J.H. Mulder, who also planned Vogeldorp, Disteldorp, and other garden villages.
The house never had hot water, gas, or a bathroom, and it is furnished with furniture and household goods from 1920 to 1940. During a renovation, the housing association Ymere discovered by chance that this house was still in its original condition. The Stichting Historisch Archief Tuindorp Oostzaan (HATO), founded in 1983, campaigned to preserve the dwelling and open it to visitors, which succeeded with the support of Ymere and the Amsterdam-Noord district.
One bedroom serves as an information room, where films about life and work in the Tuindorp are shown. There are also changing exhibitions, for example on the 1960 flood disaster, and a display case with anniversary pieces from the NDSM shipyard.
