About the museum
From the late 19th century until its closure in 2003, a state-owned factory on the Hembrug site near Zaandam produced weapons and ammunition. The 43-hectare site, long sealed off from the public, was the military-logistical heart of the Stelling van Amsterdam, the defensive line around the capital, and today comprises around 50 monuments and 150 buildings.
The Hembrug Museum opened on 18 May 2018. In two former transformer houses it displays objects, photos, films, documents and personal stories about production processes and everyday working life in the formerly strictly off-limits factory. An open-air presentation with monuments complements the indoor rooms.
In 2018 the Zaans Museum took over operation from the Stichting Hembrugmuseum; since then the Hembrug Museum has been one of its sites. There are also educational programmes, such as the youth lab HEMLAB, as well as regular guided tours of the site.
