About the museum
MUTEK is a young private museum. It goes back to the collecting passion of Robert van Rhijn, who began gathering European decorative arts as a teenager. After a long preparation, the museum opened its doors in autumn 2025 and was inaugurated by the historian Maarten van Rossem.
It is housed in the former second-class waiting room on the central platform of Haarlem station, between platforms 3 and 6. The listed room with its Art Nouveau interior was adapted for use as a museum. Travelers arriving by train can check in and out with their OV card directly on the platform and enter the museum without leaving the station.
The collection shows everyday objects of European origin from about 1880 to the present: furniture, lamps, glass, ceramics, jewelry, posters and prints. A large part comes from the Netherlands, along with designs by well-known designers from other European countries. The focus is on how form and function come together in everyday life.
