Molen De Adriaan
Rebuilt gallery windmill on the Spaarne in Haarlem, with mill models, working millstones and a walk-around gallery 12 meters up.
About the museum
De Adriaan windmill stands on the remains of a medieval defensive tower that was part of Haarlem's city fortifications. Entrepreneur Adriaan de Boois acquired the tower in 1778 and was permitted to build a windmill on top of it, which began operating in May 1779. At first it ground tuff into trass, an additive for waterproof mortar.
Over the course of the 19th century its use changed several times: from 1802 it processed tobacco into snuff, and from 1865 De Adriaan served as a grain mill. Economic difficulties brought milling to a halt in the early 1930s. In April 1932 the mill burned down completely – an event that caused great dismay in the city.
The desire to rebuild it remained alive for decades. A foundation raised money, and exactly 70 years after the fire, in 2002, Haarlem got its windmill back. Since then De Adriaan has been a working museum mill, run by the Stichting Molen De Adriaan with volunteers.
On a guided tour, visitors first see two floors with models of various Dutch mill types, then the milling floor with the millstones. The highlight is the wraparound gallery about twelve meters up, with views over Haarlem and the Spaarne. When a miller is present, the mill is in operation.
