About the museum
From 1941 to 1945 the site between Leusden and Amersfoort was home to Kamp Amersfoort. In this transit and labour camp run by the SS, well over 40,000 prisoners suffered from hunger, mistreatment, forced labour and the threat of executions and transports.
The Stichting Nationaal Monument Kamp Amersfoort was founded in 2000. In 2004 a memorial centre was built on the historic site, and in 2021 a new museum presentation followed. In the underground museum and on the reconstructed courtyard, the exhibition sheds light on ten groups of prisoners through ten biographies of prisoners and guards; former inmates tell their stories in video interviews.
On the wooded outdoor grounds, the so-called "schuldig landschap" (guilty landscape), post-war memorials, traces in the ground and original remains can be seen. The aim of the institution is remembrance and reflection on freedom, the rule of law and human rights.
