About the museum

The Nederlands Bakkerijmuseum was founded in 1977 by Gerrit Willem Barendsen and is located in the historic fortified town of Hattem on the IJssel. It is organised as a foundation and has been a registered museum since 2000. The first building, "Het Pand", houses an 18th-century commercial kitchen; "Het Backhuys", formerly a café, was added in 1985 and incorporated in 1987. From 1990 an underground tunnel connected the two buildings. Today the museum consists of several listed buildings linked by a passage under the street.

At its heart is a bakehouse about 150 years old, where visitors can watch the baker's work, past and present. The exhibition leads through the history of bread and pastry with utensils, baking tins, baker's horns and historic baked goods from the 19th century onwards.

In the museum theatre, bakers perform "Broodshows" that combine humour and dough artistry and tell the story of bread. In the poffertjes salon, styled after grandmother's day, poffertjes are baked according to an old family recipe. The museum is aimed at families, school classes and groups and is certified as child-friendly.
