About the museum
Hattem received city rights in 1299. The city's 650th anniversary in 1949 was celebrated with an exhibition; this also gave rise to the Stichting Oud Hattem, founded by the family doctor M. Sypkens Smit. Enthusiasm about the show led in 1971 to the establishment of an antiquities room, the modest beginning of today's museum. In 1984 it became the double museum Streekmuseum Hattem and Voermanhuis, in which, within one building complex, there is also the Anton Pieck Museum, though under its own management. Several renovations followed; in early 2012 the museum was fundamentally modernised under the title "Museum in Beweging". It has always been run exclusively by volunteers.
Its namesake is the painter Jan Voerman senior, who was born the son of a farmer in Kampen and, after his marriage in 1889, lived in Hattem with his wife Anna Verkade. He became known as the "IJsselmaler" because from the beginning of the 20th century he painted the landscapes along the IJssel, and he remained in the town until his death in 1941. The collection also shows works by his son Jan Voerman junior, known for the Verkade collector's albums, by the painter Jo Koster, who lived in Hattem from 1910 to 1924 and became known for her portraits, as well as sculptures by Bé Thoden van Velzen.
Another focus is the history of the town: from the archaeological department with a Bell Beaker grave discovered in 2012 dating from around 2400 to 1900 BC, via the castle of the Dukes of Guelders ("De Dikke Tinne"), to town views and depictions of Hattem by various artists. In the inner courtyard there is a sculpture garden, which also provides space for the Hattem sculptors' guild.
