About the museum

Since 1957 the museum has been housed in the country house Ottoburch on the Herenstraat. The history of the site goes back to the 16th century; the name Ottoburch first appears in a will in 1714. The present building dates from 1793, as a date above the fireplace and the Louis XVI-style stucco ceilings show. Later it was also called Tollenshuis, after the poet Hendrik Tollens, who lived here from 1846 to 1856. It has been a Rijksmonument since 1973.

In 1994 a modern extension with an exhibition wing was added. The Papier Biënnale has been held there ever since, joined in 2012 by the Textiel Biënnale; they make the house a centre for contemporary paper and textile art. The museum also cares for the history of Rijswijk and shows artworks and visual material from the collection, which can be searched online.

Visitors can take a break in the garden and in the Tollenscafé; the museum shop sells books and paper. The salon and the square hall have kept their wall paintings and stucco ceilings of 1793; the house is also an official wedding venue of the municipality, and the modern wing has an auditorium.
