About the museum

The Streekmuseum Krimpenerwaard goes back to history-minded residents of Krimpen aan den IJssel, who founded the Stichting Oudheidkamer (Oudheidkamer foundation) on August 18, 1953. At first they mainly collected objects from their own village; a first exhibition was held at the opening of the Algerabrug. As the collection grew through donations, the municipality made a farm at IJsseldijk 312 available in 1965. The restoration took three years, during which the collection found its form: objects from households, farms and craft businesses of the Krimpenerwaard as they were used around 1900.

Today the museum is housed in the listed 17th-century hall-house farm (hallehuis). The stable, kitchen, best room and cellar are still furnished as they once were. In the attic, all places in the municipality are presented, from Stolwijk to Krimpen aan de Lek, with typical regional themes such as inland shipping, brickworks and rope-making, as well as an old classroom in the style of "Ot en Sien". The farmyard includes a household work room, a wagon shed and a hayloft, and the former cow barn houses a coffee corner.

The house has been listed in the Dutch museum register since 1998. More than 65 volunteers keep the museum running. Since 2025, the municipality of Krimpen aan den IJssel has been working with the museum on a new direction, intended to link it more closely with local history.
