Stoom Stichting Nederland

Working steam locomotive museum in Rotterdam: visitors watch volunteers in the workshop working on historic steam locomotives and carriages.

Opening hoursAdmission €7

About the museum

The Stoom Stichting Nederland was founded in 1976 to preserve operational steam locomotives and historic railway equipment. Since October 1998 it has owned the engine shed in Rotterdam, which is both museum and workshop. It has five tracks, two inspection pits and visitor areas; outdoor facilities such as a turntable from 2003, a coal bunker and a water crane are part of it.

In the workshop, around 100 volunteers restore and maintain locomotives and carriages, without any paid staff. The collection includes several steam locomotives, among them the 01 1075, the 23 023, the 41 105 and the Austerity locomotive 8811, as well as diesel locomotives and passenger carriages, such as a Mitropa dining car from the GDR.

It is a special feature that the foundation is the only Dutch museum organisation that also runs its own equipment on German lines: the 01 1075 carries train protection systems for both countries. Instead of a permanent heritage railway, the foundation organises special trips on the network, such as steam train days and Christmas trips to Düsseldorf.

The museum sees itself as a "working museum": visitors see the vehicles in the state of care and can explore the locomotives, unless they are currently under maintenance.
