About the museum
The Van Doesburg-Rinsemahuis at Torenstraat 3 in Drachten was built in 1921 as a middle-class home to plans by the municipal architect Cees Rienks de Boer. The De Stijl co-founder Theo van Doesburg designed the colour schemes for interiors and exteriors for the new neighbourhood. He was friends with the brothers Evert and Thijs Rinsema, who worked as shoemakers in Drachten and were active as artists in their spare time. On their recommendation, Van Doesburg collaborated with De Boer for the first time and was able to put his ideas on colour and architecture into practice on a large scale.
Van Doesburg chose primary colours matched to the incidence of light in each room. Because of its bright colours, the neighbourhood soon received the nickname "Papegaaienbuurt" (Parrot Quarter). The house at Torenstraat 3 is a Rijksmonument.
In 2018, one of the houses in the Papegaaienbuurt was set up as a museum house; it has been open to the public since March 2019. During the restoration, historic layers of paint were preserved, and one bedroom still shows the original paintwork. The house is part of Museum Dr8888 (Museum Drachten) and also serves as a presentation venue for contemporary artists. Visitors can walk through the rooms and experience how art and architecture came together in an ordinary house in the early 20th century.
