About the museum
The house was built in 1777 by a peat baron. Until 1955 Jan and Sjut van den Berg lived here. They ran a small grocery shop; Jan was also a milkman, reed cutter, scherbaas (hired foreman) and farm labourer. Both plaited many doormats from rushes, called "kokels" in Frisian; the museum's name derives from this.
Jan died in 1952, leaving Sjut alone. In her will of 14 April 1955 she stipulated that the house and selected household goods should be preserved as they were as a simple museum. Sjut died later that same year, and since 1957 volunteers have furnished the house as a museum.
On display are the living room in the style of around 1950, an old-fashioned grocery shop, a collection of peat carvings by Jan Weima, a small exhibition on the idiosyncratic villager Pieter Tibbesma, and the "Duivelkeamer" (Devil's room) with old tools of peat diggers, fishermen, reed cutters and farmers. Cornelis Frederik Helffrich, known in local parlance as "the Devil of Earnewâld", lived there until 1903.
