About the museum
In Zundert, a few metres from the village church, Vincent van Gogh was born in 1853, the son of the pastor. The house of his birth, the then parsonage on the Markt, was demolished in 1903 and replaced by a new parsonage. On this spot the Vincent van GoghHuis came into being by joining the "new" parsonage and a characterful patrician house together; it opened in September 2008. During the renovation, the family's old well was discovered in the garden.
The garden, about 2,100 square metres in size, was reconstructed on the model of the layout that Vincent's mother once created, and has a terrace. In the converted barn, the Van GoghKamer, group receptions and workshops take place. The house also accommodates the tourist office VVV Zundert.
The permanent presentation "De wortels van een meester" is devoted to Vincent's youth in Zundert: a radio play in which Vincent himself speaks tells of his relationship with his brother Theo, his parents' worries, nature and his struggle with faith. A second room shows, in a mixture of artworks and quotations, how strongly he influenced later artists. In addition there are changing exhibitions by contemporary artists inspired by Van Gogh, as well as an artist-in-residence programme. The house is run by around eighty volunteers.
