About the museum
The local history museum in Ulvenhout belongs to the Heemkundekring Paulus van Daesdonck, founded in 1975, which looks after the area of the old lordship of Ginneken en Bavel and the former municipality of Nieuw-Ginneken. The association collects objects, buildings, archaeological finds, archives and above all stories from the region, and makes them accessible through the museum, lectures and publications. The museum itself opened in September 1986; it is run by the Stichting Paulus’ Museum, whose board is closely intertwined with that of the association, and everyone involved works on a voluntary basis.
It is housed in a small farmhouse from 1903 on the Pennendijk, whose original structure has been preserved as far as possible. The ground floor has a kitchen with a cellar, a parlour, a café with a shop and a side room; the upper floor has a classroom, a corner on Catholic life in the past, electricity, farm implements, and the tools of the shoemaker, barber and baker. Display cases also show old toys, headwear and archaeological finds from the area.
The collection comes largely from donations by local residents, and the former stable serves as a space for changing exhibitions on regional topics. For children, the museum takes part every year in the Erfgoed Brabant project “Museumschatjes”, in which school classes visit the museum with a learning package about life in the past.
