About the museum
The Vechtstreekmuseum tells the story of the river landscape along the Vecht between Utrecht and Muiden. It was founded in November 1994 as Stichting Museum Maarssen, after the municipality of Maarssen had outsourced its Oudheidkamer, a small antiquities collection. In 1995 the museum opened to visitors; the objects had previously moved from the attic of the country house Goudestein to the neighbouring Silverstein coach house.
The museum is located in the park of Goudestein, one of the country estates on the river. Silverstein was originally a country house in its own right and in 1754 became the coach house of the large Goudestein estate. Remarkably, besides the coach house, the orangery and bakehouse have also been preserved. From 2014 the exhibition space doubled when the municipality of Stichtse Vecht made available the rooms of the former Drogeriemuseum.
With the merger of the municipalities of Breukelen, Loenen and Maarssen on 1 January 2012, the museum received its present name. It works mainly with volunteers. The permanent exhibition describes the region from archaeological finds through castles and country estates to the disaster year of 1672, the Jewish community and industrialisation. The building also houses a VVV information point, a museum shop with an antiquarian bookshop and a coffee corner with a terrace on the Vecht.
