About the museum
The Venrays Museum is the cultural history museum of the town of Venray in the north of the province of Limburg. It is run by a foundation recognized as a non-profit cultural institution and aims to enrich people's lives through history, art and culture. It occupies the ground floor of De Borggraaf, a new building completed in December 2016 that consists of townhouses on the Eindstraat and apartments on the Mgr. Goumansplein. The museum entrance is opposite the Sint-Petrus’-Bandenkerk, the town's main church.
The collection comprises around 2,500 objects on regional history, about as many on art and some 1,500 archaeological finds. Its best-known piece is the "Danser van Wanssum": a hammerstone with a man wearing a loincloth and upper-arm ornaments engraved into it. It was discovered near Wanssum between 1960 and 1970 and is believed to be more than 10,000 years old.
The permanent exhibition tells the story of the people of Venray and the surrounding area. In addition there are temporary exhibitions, each taking up a different regional theme, as well as occasional lectures and events. Visitors can explore the house on their own or be accompanied by a guide; a museum arrangement combines the visit with coffee and vlaai, the traditional Limburg fruit tart.
