About the museum
The museum is a farm on the former Zuiderzee island of Wieringen, which the brothers Jaap and Jan Lont bought and farmed in 1937. After Jaap's death in 1978, Jan gave away the livestock and placed old objects belonging to his parents and ancestors in the stable. Hikers and cyclists asked whether they could look around the farm, and Jan invited them in for a coffee – and so the idea of a museum gradually took shape. By 1985 at the latest, the farm was a museum farm.
Jan Lont collected everything connected with the history of Wieringen, true to his motto "Weggooien kan altijd nog" (You can always throw it away later). Many people from Wieringen brought him heirlooms. In 1991 the association "Vereniging museum Jan Lont" was founded; Jan sold it the farm for one guilder, with the right to remain living there until his death in 1997. The farm is a Rijksmonument; it is a Wieringer Schuurschotboerderij dating from 1854.
Today the museum shows the life of farmers and fishermen on Wieringen and cares for the island's history, such as the Alikruik fishery or the flood of 1916. Events such as the Taandag are held regularly on the farm; groups can visit the farm, hold meetings in the meeting space or get married there. The association also runs the art lending service KunstWieringen.
