About the museum
The Oudheidkamer is located on the Kogerstraat in the centre of Den Burg and is housed in one of the oldest houses on Texel. The building was erected in 1599 as an inn for travellers and the needy, unusually for the time as a stone building. An inscription above the front door still recalls this original purpose. In 1954 the house was extensively restored, which is also when the stepped gable was created. Today it is a Rijksmonument.
Inside the house, the museum shows how people on the island lived from the end of the 19th century onwards: rooms such as the front room, the good parlour, the back room with a box bed, the kitchen with a coal stove and the cellar are furnished with furniture, crockery, clothing and traditional costumes, and a herb garden lies behind the house. The collection comprises around 7,000 objects, most of them from the period 1850 to 1950, including toys, diaries and friendship albums.
On the upper floor, a new temporary exhibition on an aspect of the island's history is held every two years. In addition, the "Oral History" project collects stories of older Texelers on film. The house is run by volunteers and belongs to the Stichting Texels Museum, which also includes Kaap Skil, the lighthouse and Ecomare.
